As a woman leader, what has been the biggest challenge in your career? Have you ever confronted any gender-related barriers?

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in my career has been overcoming self-doubt. Growing up in Russia, I was taught to be reserved and not to assert myself too strongly. When I moved to the U.S. at 18, this mindset held me back. I knew I was capable, but I lacked the confidence to speak up and claim my place.

It took years for me to step outside of my comfort zone and realise that being loud doesn’t always equate to being smart. In the construction industry, I’ve definitely faced gender-based barriers. Men often underestimate women, assuming we don’t know what we’re talking about and trying to take advantage of us financially.

How do you ensure women inclusion and empowerment in your organisation?

I believe in a merit-based approach to hiring and promoting employees. For me, it’s all about having the right skills and abilities to excel in a role. Gender, appearance, or social factors shouldn’t play a part. While the construction industry is still male-dominated, I’m hopeful that we’ll see a shift towards greater gender diversity in the near future.

Could you elaborate on your understanding of feminism?

To me, feminism is about women being independent and self-sufficient. It’s about having the same opportunities and freedoms as men, without being limited by gender stereotypes or societal expectations. It’s about recognizing and celebrating the strength and capabilities of women, and advocating for their equality in all aspects of life.

Whom do you look up to as a source of inspiration and why?

I find my greatest inspiration in Ada Rosa McNeffy, my first mentor in the real estate field. She exemplifies strong leadership, and her rigorous training equipped me with the skills needed for a successful career in real estate. Our journey together had its challenges, but I feel fortunate to have learned from her. The positive experiences we shared will always hold a special place in my heart.

Beyond the cabin, how do you ensure a perfect work-life balance?

Maintaining a work-life balance can be challenging, but it is achievable. In addition to our careers in real estate, many of us juggle families, children, and friendships. There are times when our schedules don’t align, especially since real estate agents are often on call, particularly during transactions. It’s truly rewarding when friends and family understand this lifestyle and offer their support. Ultimately, all that hard work should have a purpose, and that purpose is to find happiness. So, it’s important to engage in activities that bring you joy and remain true to yourself.
