Sydney Robinson’s Skits Take TikTok by Storm
In a television landscape saturated with both fresh releases and returning favorites, one of the most talked-about new “shows” isn’t airing on a streaming service — it’s playing out on TikTok. Sydney Robinson, a creator and actress based in New York City, has captivated millions with her viral short-form series The Group Chat. First uploaded on March 30, the skit drops viewers into a friend group’s tense fallout over an unexpected dinner guest. The twist? Robinson plays every single character, switching looks to portray the different members of the group.
Within hours, The Group Chat had gone viral. By the following morning, the video had amassed over 8 million views. Just one week later, Robinson had gained nearly 100,000 followers a day, reaching 1 million in record time. The original skit now boasts over 29 million views, and celebrities including Leslie Jones, Bethenny Frankel, Hailey Bieber, and Charlie Puth have joined the audience. Other creators have even spun off their own skits based on the original, mimicking reactions from bystanders. For Robinson, it’s proof that audiences are hungry for new, engaging formats of entertainment.
Fictional Drama with Real Impact
Though many viewers believe the skits reflect real-life drama, Robinson insists the series is entirely scripted — and intentionally so. “It’s like reality TV, but the best kind — where no one actually gets hurt,” she told Rolling Stone. The series strikes a chord by tackling themes like social etiquette, friendship dynamics, and the emotional chaos that can emerge from something as simple as a dinner plan gone wrong.
Inspired by reality television classics like Jersey Shore Family Vacation, Sydney Robinson aimed to recreate the energy of a moment that disrupts everything — like when a character reappears unexpectedly. Her storytelling cleverly mimics that same emotional chaos, delivered in digestible, addictive clips. According to Robinson, the idea was born mid-flight to Las Vegas, as she watched a scene where “The Situation” returns from jail, shaking up the entire house. “There’s something electric about that kind of drama,” she said.
A New Era for TikTok Skits
While TikTok has long been home to sketch comedy, Robinson’s rise is unusually fast. Other popular creators like Drew Talbert (BistroHuddy) and Julian Sewell (Paloma Diamond) typically build their audience over years — Robinson did it in under eight days. Her series’ popularity is so intense that it caught the attention of musician Charlie Puth, who eventually voiced the much-maligned boyfriend character, Justin. Puth had joked about playing the role, and when Robinson received his message, she re-filmed an entire segment to include his voice.
With its blend of humor, tension, and relatability, The Group Chat has proved that TikTok can serve as fertile ground for serialized entertainment. And Sydney Robinson is just getting started. She hinted that more chaotic events are coming — birthdays, bachelorettes, and beyond. While the dinner drama may soon find closure, The Group Chat, she says, “will go on.”
