Trump Nominates Kari Lake for Jamaica’s Ambassador Role | CIO Women Magazine

Key Takeaways:

  • Trump rewards loyalty by nominating high-profile 2022 election allies for overseas posts.
  • Kari Lake (Jamaica) faces scrutiny over her controversial, court-challenged leadership at USGM.
  • Doug Mastriano (Slovakia) will exit Pennsylvania politics, easing local GOP primary tensions.

President Donald Trump on Monday nominated loyal allies Kari Lake and Doug Mastriano for ambassadorial posts, elevating two former Republican gubernatorial candidates who lost high-profile races in battleground states in 2022.

The White House announced Lake as Trump’s nominee for ambassador to Jamaica and Mastriano as nominee for ambassador to Slovakia. Both appointments require Senate confirmation.

Trump Rewards Allies With Diplomatic Nominations

Kari Lake and Mastriano became prominent national figures after aligning themselves closely with Trump and supporting his false claims about the 2020 presidential election. Both lost gubernatorial races in key swing states during the 2022 midterm elections.

Mastriano, currently a Pennsylvania state senator, said he would remain in office until the Senate acts on his nomination.

“I look forward to representing our nation abroad, strengthening the friendship between our two countries, and advancing the interests of the American people,” Mastriano said in a statement posted online.

Kari Lake, a former Arizona television news anchor, also welcomed the nomination in a social media statement.

“Jamaica is a country I know very well, full of incredible people, and if confirmed by the Senate, I look forward to strengthening the partnership between our nations,” Lake wrote.

Lake Faces Questions Over Federal Media Agency Role

Kari Lake currently serves in a leadership role at the U.S. Agency for Global Media, or USGM, after being appointed by Trump last year. Her future at the agency remains unclear following the ambassador nomination.

Lake oversaw major staffing reductions at Voice of America as part of the administration’s broader effort to reshape the federal workforce. By the end of the cuts, roughly 85 percent of the agency’s staff had been removed.

Her tenure at USGM has also faced legal challenges. A federal judge ruled in March that Lake improperly led the agency because she had not been confirmed by the Senate. Later that month, the judge ordered the administration to reinstate employees who had been placed on leave.

Lake previously lost Arizona’s 2022 gubernatorial race to Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs. She also lost a 2024 Senate bid to Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego after seeking to replace former Sen. Kyrsten Sinema.

Mastriano Nomination Reshapes Pennsylvania Politics

Mastriano’s nomination could affect Republican politics in Pennsylvania ahead of next week’s gubernatorial primary election.

The state senator had supported a write-in campaign connected to his political base, though he was not directly involved in the effort. The campaign threatened to complicate the path for Republicans’ preferred candidate, Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity.

Mastriano won the Republican nomination for governor in Pennsylvania in 2022 but lost the general election after a campaign closely tied to Trump’s election claims and conservative activism.

Trump has increasingly relied on loyal political allies for administration and diplomatic positions during his second term, often selecting figures with strong ties to his political movement rather than traditional foreign policy backgrounds.

The nominations now move to the Senate, where lawmakers will determine whether Lake and Mastriano are confirmed for the overseas posts.
