Keeping the Surrounding Area Safe During Construction: Three Critical Factors

Construction Site Safety: Protecting the Surrounding Area | CIO Women Magazine

Thousands of construction projects are going on across the world every day, and while crucial to the infrastructure of our society, they do bring with them a lot of disruption and potential hazards.

As a new construction company, it’s your job to ensure construction site safety, not only to make sure the buildings and structures you erect are safe but also to operate in a manner that causes minimal problems to the surrounding area.

In this article, you’ll learn about three critical aspects of operating your site safely and effectively.

3 critical factors to ensure Construction Site Safety:

Key Factors for construction site safety:

1. Truck Wash Systems

Trucks comprise a key component to the effective functioning of a construction site. As you know, without them, transporting large amounts of necessary materials would prove extremely difficult.

Despite their importance, though, they’re also one of the primary areas of your site you need to focus on to mitigate the risk of contaminants. Trucks going to and from the site carry a large amount of dirt and debris on their tires and body, and without a truck wash system, these contaminants are then easily spread into the wider area with the dangerous potential of toxifying water sources.

Truck wash systems effectively de-contaminate the truck as it enters or leaves the site with high-pressure water, greatly minimizing the risks outlined.

2. The Importance of Fencing and Signage

It may seem simple and basic, but strategically placed signage and properly installed fencing go a long way in maintaining a safe working environment.

Firstly, fencing stops unauthorized personnel from entering the site where they might cause damage to the wider area, themselves, and others. It also helps to prevent contaminants like dust and sand from being blown out of the construction site by strong winds.

Signage is there primarily to remind workers to stay safe – to wear their PPE, be generally vigilant, and adhere to other important safety practices. It’s also there to communicate to the public that there are dangers in the vicinity, helping to keep ordinary people as far away from the site as possible so that they may navigate safely around the area.

3. Noise Management

As far as aspects of a working site that can disrupt the surrounding area, noise is one of the biggest problems. Continuous exposure to noise can greatly disrupt people at work in buildings nearby, diminishing local people’s ability to carry out their daily tasks properly. Naturally, the noise can also have a major impact on residents, particularly if work is being conducted in the evening when people are sleeping.

Be mindful to try and schedule noisy activities at appropriate times such as mid-morning to lessen the impact, and try to use machinery designed to perform at a lower noise level. Noise can be a difficult challenge to overcome, but the important thing is that you’re transparent with the wider community and that you do what you can.

Wrapping Up

The above sections only represent three of many elements that go into working with respect to the wider area. During site set-up, always do what you can to work closely with the community – inform them of what work is being done and that you’re doing your best to manage disruptions and construction site safety. They’ll be grateful you spoke with them, and this sort of open communication will help you navigate any potential issues down the road.
