Passengers Safe Despite Harrowing Crash
A Delta Airlines flight crashed while landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday, overturning on the snow-covered ground. Despite the severity of the accident, all 76 passengers and four crew members on board survived. At least 18 passengers were hospitalized, but authorities confirmed there were no life-threatening injuries. Three individuals—including a child, a man in his 60s, and a woman in her 40s—suffered critical injuries. The child was transported to the Hospital for Sick Children and was reported to be in good condition.
Toronto Pearson Airport President and CEO Deborah Flint credited first responders for the successful evacuation and lack of fatalities. “There was no loss of life, and this is due in part to our heroic and trained professionals,” Flint stated during a press briefing. The incident prompted a temporary suspension of flights at Toronto Pearson, with operations resuming by 5 p.m. ET, though two runways remained closed.
Investigation Underway into Cause of Crash
Flight 4819 had departed from Minneapolis and encountered no apparent crosswind conditions or runway issues upon landing, according to Toronto Airport Fire Chief Todd Aitken. However, strong wind gusts reaching up to 40 mph were reported in the region. Authorities have yet to determine what caused the plane to flip and catch fire.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is leading the investigation, with support from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that he had been in contact with Canadian officials to offer assistance.
Reactions from Officials and Airline Executives
Delta Airlines issued a statement emphasizing its focus on caring for those affected. CEO Ed Bastian expressed gratitude to first responders and airline staff, saying, “The hearts of the entire global Delta family are with those affected by today’s incident at Toronto-Pearson International Airport.” Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow also voiced relief that all passengers and crew were accounted for and praised the swift response of emergency teams.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, acknowledging that the flight originated in Minneapolis, conveyed his appreciation for the professionals on-site. As investigations continue, airline officials and regulatory bodies are working to determine the cause of the crash and ensure safety measures are reinforced.
