Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, landed in Bangkok on Tuesday for a refueling stop en route to the Northern Mariana Islands, where he is expected to finalize a plea deal with the U.S. government. The chartered flight from London, confirmed by Assange’s wife, Stella, touched down at Don Mueang International Airport.
Officials disclosed that the plane is scheduled to proceed to Saipan, the capital of the U.S. Commonwealth in the Pacific, where Assange will appear in court on Wednesday. According to the U.S. Justice Department, Assange plans to plead guilty to an Espionage Act charge involving the unlawful acquisition and dissemination of classified national defense information. The decision to hold the hearing in Saipan stems from Assange’s reluctance to travel to the continental U.S. and its proximity to his home country, Australia.
