As of Thursday, more than 900,000 vehicles in the US are equipped with ChatGPT artificial intelligence, which Mercedes Benz and Microsoft will collaborate to test.

Enhancing the System Functionality

The premium manufacturer announced that it will utilise the cutting-edge technology for audio requests through its Hey Mercedes voice assistant, considerably enhancing the system’s functionality. A Microsoft representative said that it is the first time ChatGPT has been used in a car. For American consumers, Mercedes Benz said an optional beta programme will start on Friday. Customers can sign up via the Mercedes me app from the firm, or they can do it from their car by saying, “Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta programme.”

“While most voice assistants are limited to predefined tasks and responses, ChatGPT leverages a large language model to greatly improve natural language understanding and expand the topics to which it can respond,” the automaker stated in a release.

ChatGPT and the Automobile Sector

The prospective uses of ChatGPT in the automobile sector have also become a topic of discussion, as they have in other sectors. While others claim that powerful AI or machine learning is already being used in autonomous vehicles—such as General Motors—the Mercedes Benz alliance represents one of the first concrete use cases for ChatGPT.

Earlier this year, GM announced it was investigating ChatGPT use cases for its vehicles as part of a larger partnership with Microsoft, an investor in OpenAI, the company that developed the technology. The new integration, according to Eric Boyd, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s AI platform, will, among other things, boost voice commands and engagement, task capabilities, and allow follow-up queries.
