Meta Plans Major Upgrade to Ray-Ban Smart Glasses to Challenge Samsung’s AR Vision

Ray-Ban Smart Glasses: Meta's Bold Move Against Samsung | CIO Women Magazine

Meta’s Strategic Move Against Samsung’s AR Glasses

Meta is preparing for a major challenge in the augmented reality (AR) market as Samsung gears up to launch its AR glasses. The tech giant, in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm, is developing next-generation XR experiences. In anticipation of Samsung’s debut of its AR glasses, Meta is planning a significant upgrade to its own Ray-Ban Smart Glasses. The next iteration of these glasses is set to feature a display, a critical upgrade to keep up with the competition, and could launch as soon as 2025.

Upgraded Ray-Ban Smart Glasses to Include Display

Currently, Meta’s Ray-Ban Smart Glasses do not feature a display, relying instead on voice commands and gesture controls for user interaction. However, a report from Financial Times reveals that the upcoming version of these smart glasses will include a display. This upgrade will allow users to interact with the glasses more seamlessly, receiving notifications and responses powered by Meta’s artificial intelligence (AI).

The report suggests that Meta’s next-generation Ray-Ban Smart Glasses could be released as early as the second half of 2025. Although the technology behind these glasses is still evolving, the inclusion of a display is expected to be a key feature in Meta’s push to compete with the growing AR and XR market.

Meta’s Push Toward Advanced AR Technology

Meta’s move to include a display in its upcoming smart glasses follows the company’s earlier efforts with a prototype known as “Project Orion.” These smart glasses, which featured a projector display that could project content into the user’s field of view, were too expensive for a commercial release at the time. However, with the impending launch of Samsung’s first XR headset and the announcement of Android XR by Google, Meta is exploring a more cost-effective version of the display technology to compete in the rapidly evolving AR space.

The development of these glasses comes as Samsung plans to release its own XR headset in the latter half of 2025, followed by AR glasses. With major players like Apple, Meta, and Samsung entering the XR glasses and headset market, it will be interesting to see how each brand’s offerings evolve and who will lead the market in the coming years.
