Subway, renowned for its footlong sandwiches, is stepping up its game with the nationwide launch of Sidekicks. The trio of delectable 12-inch snacks includes a chocolate chip cookie, a Cinnabon churro, and an Auntie Anne’s pretzel. Starting January 22, customers across the country can indulge in these unique offerings that go beyond the conventional sandwich fare.

Doug Fry, President of Subway North America, expressed the brand’s commitment to culinary innovation, stating, “The introduction of Sidekicks builds on six decades of equity and expertise in all things footlong.” This latest addition follows Subway’s menu transformation journey initiated in 2021, which featured ingredient overhauls, new sandwiches, and the decision to slice meats on premises in 2023.

A Glimpse into the Sidekicks Experience

For those seeking more than just the classic footlong sandwich, Sidekicks promise to be the perfect companion. In an exclusive review, it was revealed that the Footlong Cookie, priced at $5, is a colossal, soft, and intensely chocolaty treat. Described as a cross between a cookie and cake, this colossal creation is suggested for sharing among friends or paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

The Cinnabon Footlong Churro, priced at $2, makes its nationwide debut after a successful test run in September 2023. While the flavor is commendable, the review notes a slight lack of crunch in texture. Nevertheless, at its affordable price, it remains a snack worthy of a second try.

The standout of the trio is the Auntie Anne’s Footlong Pretzel, priced at $3. Served warm with a side of Subway’s Honey Mustard, it mirrors the beloved Auntie Anne’s Original Soft Pretzel. The review highlights its pillowy-soft texture and suggests that a touch more salt would have perfected this warm, snackable delight.

Culinary Vision and Customer Feedback

Subway’s Head of Culinary, Chef Paul Fabre, shared insights into the development of Sidekicks. “We tested a few items, and these were the items that really sparked with our guests and that people loved,” he said. Emphasizing the appeal of the Footlong Pretzel, Fabre highlighted its warmth, snackability, and the irresistible draw of a footlong snack.

Contrary to expectations, Subway has observed customers incorporating Sidekicks into their traditional meal orders, adding a new dimension to the dining experience. Doug Fry commented, “I would say we were expecting folks to come in and grab these as snacks. What we’ve seen though, is that folks are adding them on to their footlong sandwich orders to kind of complete their meal, which is pretty cool.”

As Subway continues to redefine its menu and expand its culinary horizons, the nationwide release of Sidekicks marks a bold step into the world of footlong snacks, offering patrons a delightful divergence from the ordinary.
