Kawasaki, a renowned name in the world of motorcycles, has recently unveiled its foray into the electric motorcycle market with two exciting models—the Kawasaki Ninja e-1 and Z e-1. The Japanese motorcycle manufacturer has also disclosed pricing details, taking a significant step into the emerging electric motorcycle sector.
Both the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 models are now available in North American markets, including the United States and Canada, as well as in the United Kingdom. This marks a strategic move by Kawasaki to introduce its electric motorcycles to key markets.
In the United States, motorcycle enthusiasts can get their hands on the Ninja e-1 for a competitive starting price of $7,599, while the 2024 Z e-1 comes in at a slightly lower cost, starting at $7,299. These price points have generated considerable interest, especially considering the performance specifications of the bikes.
Impressive Features and Performance for Urban Commuters
While the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 may not match the performance levels of Kawasaki’s 125cc combustion engine-powered models, their affordability places them right in the heart of the commuter electric motorcycle market. Both models are equipped with a 5 kW electric motor, capable of delivering bursts of up to 9 kW of peak power.

Riders can choose between two riding modes: Eco and Road mode. In Eco mode, the motorcycles operate at lower power and are limited to a speed of 40 mph (64 km/h), but with the boost button engaged, they can reach up to 47 mph (76 km/h). On the other hand, Road mode offers a higher constant speed of 55 mph (88 km/h), with the possibility of boosting it to 65 mph (105 km/h) using the E-Boost feature. It’s important to note that the E-Boost feature has a 15-second limit, encouraging riders to use it judiciously, particularly in overtaking situations.
One distinctive feature of these electric motorcycles is their use of removable 1.5 kWh battery packs, providing a combined capacity of 3 kWh. While this capacity is lower than some other electric motorcycles, it remains competitive. Kawasaki claims that in Road mode, riders can achieve a range of approximately 41 miles (66 km), although the specific speed at which this range is measured remains undisclosed. This translates to an efficiency of 73 Wh/mile, suggesting an average speed of around 35 mph (56 km/h).
Urban-Focused and Convenient Riding
Despite their impressive affordability and features, it’s worth noting that the Kawasaki Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 are designed primarily for urban use. With a real-world range of less than 40 miles (64 km) and a top speed of 55 mph (88 km/h), they are not suitable for highway travel, limiting their utility to local urban riding.
However, for many city residents, these electric motorcycles could be the perfect solution for their commuting needs. The inclusion of removable batteries makes charging convenient, even for apartment residents who can charge them at home. Each 25 lb. (11.4 kg) battery can be fully recharged from a standard wall outlet in under four hours or reach 20-80% charge in under two hours.
Kawasaki’s entry into the electric motorcycle market with the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 brings affordability and convenience to urban commuters. While they may not match the performance of some competitors, their competitive pricing and practical features make them a compelling choice for those navigating city streets.
