Recently, Fairphone, a company recognised for its highly repairable and environmentally friendly products with long-term software support agreements, unveiled its newest smartphone.
Environmentally-friendly Approach
The Fairphone 5 has hardware that is comparable to that of its predecessors, but it offers a wealth of features that can appeal to those who care about the environment. The device is stated to be constructed of 70 percent recycled and fairly sourced components, and it is also said to be assembled by workers who are allegedly paid a “living wage.” The Fariphone 5 is made of more than 70% “fair focus or recycled materials,” including fairly-procured minerals, according to the device’s official listing page.
Technical Specifications
The 6.46-inch FullHD+ (2700 x 1224) 90Hz OLED display on the Fairphone 5 has a maximum brightness of 880 nits. It is entirely laminated with an oleophobic layer, covered by Corning Gorilla Glass 5, and protected from scratches. The gadget is powered by Qualcomm’s QCM 6490 SoC, which features an Adreno 642L GPU and an octa-core CPU running at 2.7GHz. For those who are curious, Fairphone picked an industrial IoT CPU because it offers longer software support than consumer SoCs with the Snapdragon name. 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage space, which can be increased by up to 2TB with a microSD card, are further hardware specifications.
The gadget has a 4,200mAh battery that Fairphone claims may last up to a full day of usage (and supports 30W rapid charging).
A 50MP Sony IMX 800 main sensor with OIS+EIS is the focal point of a dual-camera arrangement for imaging possibilities on the back. A 50MP SONY IMX 858 ultra-wide shooter with EIS and a 117 degree field of view is also included. The gadget can record 1080p video at 60 frames per second and 4K footage at up to 30 frames per second.
The 50MP Samsung JN1 image sensor on the front of the Fairphone 5 is housed in a punch-hole casing. Wi-Fi 6E, NFC, sub-6 GHz 5G, Bluetooth 5.2, and GPS are available as connectivity choices. One physical SIM and one electronic SIM card are supported by the device’s dual-SIM functionality. It is also IP 55 rated, which indicates resistance to water and dust, and contains a USB-C port for charging.
Astounding Software Support
However, the Fairphone 5’s astounding software support of at least 8 years is its strongest selling feature. That includes an additional three years of security fixes and at least five years of confirmed Android updates. According to the corporation, depending on hardware support, it will attempt to extend the upgrade timeline to 10 years (until 2033). In keeping with the sustainability concept, the Fairphone 5 is also said to be simpler to repair than other contemporary smartphones because all you need to take it apart is a Phillips head screwdriver, according to the manufacturer.
