Lanie Grant, a standout freshman for the University of North Carolina’s women’s basketball team, has been selected among 27 elite athletes invited to the USA Women’s U19 Trials, a key step toward competing on the international stage. The trials, set to take place in Colorado Springs beginning June 18, will determine the 12-member roster that will represent the United States at the 2025 FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup in Brno, Czechia, from July 12 to 20.
Grant’s invitation marks a new milestone in her already impressive basketball journey. Her performance during the 2023–24 collegiate season with the UNC Tar Heels captured national attention and set her apart as one of the sport’s most promising young talents. With her dynamic presence and consistent play, Grant has quickly made a name for herself, earning accolades and now potentially a spot on the international court.
Proven International Pedigree with USA Basketball
This is not Lanie Grant first involvement with USA Basketball. The Midlothian, Virginia native has previously worn the national jersey with pride and success. She was part of the gold medal-winning USA U16 Team at the 2023 FIBA Americas U16 AmeriCup, where she posted an average of 11.2 points per game. Her impressive run continued in 2024 when she played a pivotal role in helping the USA U17 team clinch another gold medal at the FIBA U17 Women’s World Cup in Mexico.
Her back-to-back triumphs at the international level showcase her experience and readiness to contribute at even higher levels of competition. Grant’s familiarity with the USA Basketball system and her demonstrated poise in global tournaments will be critical advantages as she heads into this month’s trials.
Stellar Collegiate Debut Powers Momentum
During her freshman year at North Carolina, Lanie Grant made an immediate impact, securing a spot on the ACC All-Freshman Team. She appeared in all 37 games of the season, delivering consistent performances and contributing significantly to the Tar Heels’ campaign. Among her highlights were 11 double-digit scoring games, including a career-high 19 points that fueled UNC’s dramatic comeback win over Louisville.
In addition to conference recognition, Lanie Grant also caught the eye of national media, earning the USBWA Tamika Catchings Freshman of the Week honor in December a testament to her growing reputation on the court.
As she prepares to compete in Colorado Springs later this month, Lanie Grant stands on the cusp of yet another significant achievement. Making the final U19 roster would not only affirm her growing status within USA Basketball but also provide another opportunity for her to shine on the international stage. Whether or not she makes the cut, her trajectory points to a bright future for both her collegiate career and potential professional aspirations.
